Agriculture

We are Soil; Soil is us

Activate-to-Relate II 2022: Community Volunteers work together to plant garlic and establish permanent garden beds..

Philadelphia Community Farm has historically been just that; a Community Farm. By utilizing a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, PCF previously served anywhere from 60 to 125 garden member households annually. One of the first CSA farms in the Midwest, the vegetable gardens offered shares for over thirty years without the use of chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides.

Despite these practices agricultural degradation resulted from aggressive cultivation, and left the arable land on our acreage in severe need of regeneration.

With a change in farming leadership in late 2020, the CSA program was reconfigured. Our current farmers hold the ideals of a broader understanding of farming; one that seeks to heal the harms of colonialism by including the usage of historically diverse spiritual and cultural agricultural practices on the land.

These types of practices are traditionally rooted in indigenous land stewardship ideals from across the globe; they bring with them the opportunity for access through education and relevant historical contextual connection for BIPOC & QT peoples - thus marrying  conservation with cultivation by way of liberation and activism on the land. In this way we not only foster places for Humans to heal from generational trauma, through presence and  education in nature spaces; we offer healing to the land from which our produce is grown, passing the life-giving properties of healthy soil into our bodies.

By using small-scale intensive farming practices on conservation easement land, PCF has positioned itself to be a leader in redefining conservation to include agriculture. We see it as imperative to view conservation holistically; including soil restoration as a part of protecting nature spaces is non-negotiable for human liberation.

Throughout the summer season we donate farm fresh produce to local food shelves and metro area food banks. In 2021 we donated over 825 pounds of farm grown produce, with 200+ lbs being harvested by volunteers through the North Country Food Alliance Gleaning Program.

In 2022 through The FOOD FOR ALL Project alone, we donated over 700 lbs of fresh produce to Polk County and the surrounding St. Croix Valley.

Historically we have opened opportunities for low-income families to participate in our CSA membership through a shared cost mutual aid program.

In an effort to provide access to the broadest populations possible we have closed our CSA program.

Just as in 2023, in 2024 we are participating in Wisconsin Local Foods Purchase Assistance Program (WI-LFPA) for the 2024 growing season! This program aims to “Strengthen local and regional food systems, support WI farmers, and distribute fresh nutritious foods to underserved communities”.

Although we no longer operate as a CSA, we continue to be dedicated to low-cost & no-cost food distribution method.

We use Regenerative Practices and focuses on culturally relevant varieties and historically ADOS and Euro-Indigenous technologies including and not limited to: permanent bed systems, Hügelkultur, companion planting, cover-cropping, biochar application, Jadam and Biodynamics.
